Fix EPF Error: claim filing cannot proceed as the members date of exit epf and reason of exit is not marked
Many EPF members face a common problem when they try to withdraw their PF money or transfer their account. The system shows this error message:
"Claim filing cannot proceed as the member's date of exit EPF and reason of exit is not marked."
This guide explains why this happens and how to fix it easily.
Why Does This Error Happen?
When you leave a job, your previous employer is responsible for updating two things on the EPFO portal:
1. Your Date of Exit (the last day you worked there).
2. The Reason for Exit (why you left, e.g., resignation, retirement).
If your old employer has not updated these details, the EPFO system still thinks you are an active employee of that company. Since you cannot withdraw money from an "active" account (except for specific loans), the portal blocks your withdrawal claim.
How to Fix This Error
You have two options to solve this. The best way is to ask your employer, but if they are busy or gone, you can do it yourself.
Option 1: Ask Your Employer (Best Method)
The easiest solution is to contact your HR or payroll team at your previous company.
- What to do: Send an email to your previous company's HR department. Give them your UAN and ask them to mark your "Date of Exit" and "Reason for Exit" for that specific company on the Employer Portal.
- Result: Once they update it, the change will reflect in your account very quickly.
Option 2: Do It Yourself (Self-Service)
If your employer is not replying or the company is closed, you can mark the exit date yourself on the EPFO Member Portal.
Requirements Before You Start:
- Your UAN must be active.
- Your Aadhaar card must be linked to your UAN.
- Important: You can only mark the exit date 2 months after you actually left the job.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
- Log In: Go to the EPFO Unified Portal and log in with your UAN and password.
- Go to 'Mark Exit': Click on the 'Manage' tab at the top menu, then select 'Mark Exit'.
- Select Your Old Job: In the dropdown menu labeled 'Select Employment', choose the PF account number of your previous employer where you need to mark the exit.
- Enter Details:
- Enter your actual Date of Exit (the last day you were on the payroll).
- Select the Reason for Exit (e.g., Short Service, Retirement, etc.).
- Get OTP: Click 'Request OTP'. You will receive a code on your Aadhaar-linked mobile number.
- Verify and Submit: Enter the OTP, check the declaration box, and click Submit.
- Done! Your exit date is now updated. You can immediately file your withdrawal or transfer claim.
Important Tips to Remember
- Check the Date Carefully: Make sure you enter the correct last working day. If you make a mistake, changing it later is a long process and requires help from the Regional PF Office.
- Aadhaar & Mobile: If you do not receive the OTP, check that your mobile number is correctly linked to your Aadhaar and that your e-KYC is complete.
- Verify Before Claim: Before filing your withdrawal claim, go to View > Service History to confirm that the "Date of Exit" is now visible in the system.
